TRAI Revamps Regulations To Control Pesky Calls, Spam Messages

TRAI has once again revamped its regulations on spam messages and pesky calls for the benefit of customers. It has asked the telcos to further ensure commercial communications are only made through registered senders.

Releasing a statement Thursday the authority writes, “…a complete overhaul of the regulation had become unavoidable. The objective of the regulation notified today is to effectively deal with the nuisance of spam experienced by the subscribers.”

The new regulations help offering complete control to subscribers over consent as well as ability to revoke at such communications.

TRAI added that such consent power will help in bringing to end major abuse of the current regulations.

According to the statement access provider need to establish Customer Preference Registration Facioity (CPRF) too and facility should be provided to record consent of customers in relation to the commercial communication.

Meanwhile, it is also learned the authority has come up with the concept of registered templates for SMS as well as voice communication to help overcome mixing of promotional messages into the transactional stream.

TRAI authorities said such steps will give relief to subscribers who don’t want to entertain unwanted communication.

Penalty between Rs 1,000 and Rs 50 lakh has been mentioned in the statement if the regulations are violated.

TRAI said, “The infrastructure may be outsourced and shared, while the unbundling of the functions allows third-party provider to compete for providing best quality solutions at lowest cost.”
