It is doubtful to the highest level whether the general elections in Pakistan was fair, if take a look to what the Trump administration is saying. It has not yet confirmed the polls were free and fair. More to this, the State Department didn’t deploy election observers in India’s neighboring country due to security concerns.
Imran Khan’s party received complete support of army and the other two major political parties, the PML-N and PPP, were under seen under good constraints in their campaigns.
Pakistan watchers doubted the fairness of Pakistan’s elections and Trump administration said it was closly monitoring the situation without declaring the polls were not rigged.
State Department spokesperson said, “We continue to monitor developments and have consistently emphasized our support for free, fair, transparent and accountable elections in Pakistan, as we do around the world.”
According to former Pakistan ambassador to the US, Husain Haqqani, the Pakistan elections result was foretold.
The Hudson Institute think-tank added Imran Khan’s party was operating with freedom and establishment backing.
He further mentioned that election result in Pakistan will not change anything in the country unless the jihad business is shut down and the army-led establishment recognizes it as source of isolation in the world and economic difficulties.
Meanwhile, incumbent PML-N party of former Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif has raised allegations saying election was largely manipulated.
PML-N president Shahbaz Sharif said at a midnight press conference election was a blatant violation of the mandate of the people.
