Modi’s Ayushman Bharat healthcare scheme gaining international popularity

Prime Minister Narendra Modi is gearing up to seek a second term and ahead of the Lok Sabha elections his Ayushman Bharat health insurance scheme has gained worldwide attention.

Modi's Ayushman Bharat healthcare scheme gaining international popularity

Lately Microsoft founder Bill Gates praised the most ambitious healthcare initiative that seeks to cover 40 percent of India’s 1.3 billion population and within 100 days since launching in September 2018 it has achieved providing free treatment of about 7 lakh people.

In the 2018 budget government allocated more than Rs 54,000 crore to the health ministry. This year the figure may rise considering rapid implementation of Ayushman Bharat scheme.

Finance Minister Arun Jaitley will be presenting interim budget on February 1 and it is believed a considerable amount is to be allocated for the promising scheme.

Modi has usually talked about the scheme and his vision in providing free healthcare to poor families in his public speeches. Often he says ailment of one member in the poor family ruin the entire family.

To avail the benefits of Ayushman Bharat scheme poor families don’t need to enroll. It is designed to be based on entitlements. All eligible families are issued a dedicated PM-JAY identification number and card as well.

Until now about 2.5 to 3 lakh eCards have been issued to eligible families.

Ayushman Bharat focuses on quality care and ease of access to healthcare.

An appeal

The legacy of IPA, founded by Nikhil Chakravartty, the doyen of journalism in India, to keep the flag of independent media flying high, is facing the threat of extinction due to the effect of the Covid pandemic. Only an emergency funding can avert such an eventuality. We appeal to all those who believe in the freedom of expression to contribute to this noble cause.
