Pollution is one of the major challenges in India and considering this should get a solution the Narendra Modi government launched Friday a five-year action plan to tackle the situation in 102 Indian cities, which were earlier identified by the Central Pollution Control Board.
Ministry of Environmental, Forest and Climate Change said the overall objective of National Clean Air Programme (NCAP) is to tackle environmental challenges and try to bring down pollution levels to safe PM2.5 and PM10 as set by national and international studies.
The initiative is path-breaking and NCAP is very inclusive program holding special relevance said NITI Aayog CEO Amitabli Kant.
Modi government said Rs 300 crore is budgeted to spend for the program in first two years and partnering will be done with multilateral and bilateral international organizations to achieve goals.
Under the plan the government is learned to be increasing air quality monitoring centres across India.
Last year, in April, draft NCAP was released and was highly criticized for not laying down tangible goals.
It is learned the draft mainly focused on strengthening monitoring and assessment of pollution and talked little about inadequate enforcement of existing industrial standards.
Air pollution in Indian cities is regularly on rise and it is widely discussed too. A report released by the World Health Organization in May 2018 revealed fourteen of the top fifteen most polluted cities in the world were from India.
