LUCKNOW:
With BSP national president Mayawati announcing the support of her party in
Madhya Pradesh and Rajasthan to Congress, some ideas about the shape of the
future alliance in UP against BJP in the 2019 Lok Sabha polls are emerging.
Mayawati categorically said that her
support to Congress was meant to keep BJP away from power.
It would be worth mentioning that
the BSP has increased its strength in all the three states of Rajasthan, Madhya
Pradesh and Chhattisgarh, winning a total number of 10 MLAs in the three states.
In 2013 BSP had only eight MLAs. In
Chhattisgarh BSP won two MLAs, working jointly with the party of Ajit Jogi
while in 2013 it had only one MLA. In Rajasthan BSP won six MLAs against three
in 2013 .But in MP there was a loss of two seats from the four it won in 2013.
Samajwadi Party national president
Akhilesh too has announced the support of his party MLA in Madhya Pradesh to
the Congress government. SP could win only one seat that too in MP, where the
party had registered victory in seven seats with total 3.7 per cent votes.
With BSP and SP supporting Congress
in Rajasthan and MP, it is obvious that the two parties would rethink their
strategy about alliance in UP. Earlier, the two parties had given the
impression that they would only accommodate RLD of Chaudhary Ajit Singh.
Since Mayawati was critical of
Congress, Akhilesh Yadav had no option but to follow her and he also took a
position against Congress. Mayawati had made it clear that she was not willing
to leave any seats for Congress and further asked Samajwadi Party to
accommodate RLD and other smaller groups for the Lok Sabha polls.
It may be mentioned that according
to the formula worked out by SP and BSP, only six seats were to be left for
Congress. And these included the two seats won by Sonia Gandhi in Rae Bareli
and Rahul Gandhi in Amethi, while four seats where the party came second were
also considered.
Both the parties had bitter
experience when they received a drubbing at the hands of voters in the 2017
assembly elections when Rahul and Akhilesh had joined hands, but got very few
seats and there was a sharp decline in the vote percentage.
With success in three states,
Congress has been recharged with energy and this will embolden the party to
renegotiate seat sharing in UP.
The emergence of Jansatta Party of
independent Thakur MLA and Pragatisheel Samajwadi Morcha of Shivpal Yadav and
Suheldeo Samajwadi Party of cabinet minister Om Prakash and Rajbhar Peace Party
of Dr Ayub, besides NCP and the left parties will also influence the future
alliances in UP. (IPA Service)
