On the other, the BJP caught contemptuously dismissing the Hindu horde as “stupid devotees” to take advantage of their blind faith, fair game. The BJP admission caught on tape! A snatch of politically-loaded conversation between the temple’s high priest and BJP state unit president Sridharan Pillai. With that the BJP’s true agenda and political opportunism stood bared, impeached.
This, even as 2,300 uniforms with flesh, blood and bones in them – Kerala police men, including 30 black-uniformed commandos, took over the temple compound. The Ayyappa Swami temple in Sabarimala was set to open 5 pm Monday for the Chitra Thirunal Vishesham, perhaps the last chance for a female in the age group 10-50 to breach through muscular masculinity and establish fair foothold in tradition-bound men’s world.
Last chance! November 13, the Supreme Court could reset its September 28 verdict that ruled that women have an equal right to worship in the Sabarimala shrine. The 25-hour window that opens Monday evening closes at 10 pm on November 6. Around the time, America is in the thick of voting for the midterms. Will POTUS Donald Trump go to bed with a deep sense of fulfilment Tuesday night or with an unspeakable dread of anytime impeachment? Will Swami Ayyappa survive through 25 hours of fair challenge?
Sunday (October 4) evening, the Sabarimala Ayyappa temple compound turned into a police camp. Khaki overwhelmed all colours. Police wireless crackled in the silence of the verdant Eden. Swami Ayyappa in his sanctum sanctorum was in virtual police custody. Will a forbidden female step in and disturb eternal celibacy, render Ayyappa a common god of no denomination, impeach him?
In the bitter gourd – the sliver of land called God’s Own Country – godless Kerala Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan, warned by Hindutva forces that he will be the “last communist” in Kerala if he didn’t give up his death-for-Ayyappa fetish, marshalled the khaki into fighting-fit. The enemy was recognizable – BJP and the Hindutva roadrunners, RSS and 120 Hindu outfits gathered under the Ayyappa Karma Samiti umbrella, including Rahul Easwar’s Ayyappa Dharma Sena. Police have photographs of over “300 terrorists from last time”, many of whom are still at large and could return dressed as devotee, therefore, the biometric facial detector cameras.
Chances are if an innocent Ayyappa bhakta’s facial features match 70% of that of a known “terrorist”, he will be bundled off to the slammer quicker than he would be able to shout “Swami-eh Saranam”. The times, they are disturbed. If Ram is god up north, Ayyappa is deity down south. And for the BJP, the twain should meet for Prime Minister Narendra Modi not to fare worse than impeachment in 2019.
The Hindutva plan is to send groups of over-50 women, one after the other, into battle and, if need be, stop physically any “fertile female” from invading the sanctum sanctorum. Therefore, the presence of Pinarayi’s heavy female cops; all over 50, sent in to tackle and foil the Hindutva plan. In the “lunatic asylum” that is Kerala, the Hindu Malayalee was seemingly behind the BJP, but Pillai’s contemptuous referral to him as a “stupid idiot” can impeach the BJP.
The anger against Pinarayi and the CPM is palpable and real. But the BJP’s game to prey on “blind faith” stands exposed and if the “stupid” Malayalee is not that much of an idiot as the BJP thinks he/she is, the Hindutva takeover of Kerala is not likely to happen anytime soon. Predator and prey, the tables have turned. And it will not be Swami Ayyappa who will be impeached. The impeachment of the BJP, one way or the other, looks more likely.
