About half ton people have been killed in Indonesia after a massive earthquake of 7.5-magnitude brought down buildings and triggered tsunami. In a video footage waves of water as high as 10 feet could be seen ramping in Palu, about 80 kilometers away from the epicenter.
According to disaster agency 356 people have been injured in Palu, the city of about 350,000 people, on Sulawesi island. Locals fled to higher ground while waves of water inundate a large mosque and brought down several buildings.
The quake was comparatively more powerful than those that hit the Indonesian island of Lombok in July and August and killed hundreds of people.
One of the local hospitals said thirty people died at their facility and more than a dozen are very seriously injured, including nine head trauma patients.
The powerful quake struck after a small jolt that killed one in the off central Sulawesi at a depth of 10 kilometres just before 1100 GMT.
According to US Geological Survey such shallow quakes are usually more destructive. It can cause damage to poorly built structures.
“There are reports that many buildings collapsed in the earthquake… Residents panicked and scattered out of their homes.” national disaster agency spokesman Sutopo Purwo Nugroho said.

The Palu airport has been shut down and to remain closed for about 24 hours.
