The BJP is believed to have offered Ajit Singh a governorship and the
RLD a ministerial berth in the UP government. The ruling party is keen to wean
away the influential Jat leader from the SP-BSP alliance, which is making the
party restless. But the alliance has already made moves to checkmate the BJP
plan and prevent RLD from falling into its bait. As soon as SP chief Akhilesh
Yadav realised that BJP is trying to woe the RLD, he called Ajit Singh’s son
Jayant on the phone and sent his car to the airport to pick him up and bring
him to Lucknow. After a long discussion Akhilesh reportedly promised one seat
more from his quota to RLD because Mayawati does not want to give more than two
seats to RLD while the party has been demanding six seats. As Jayant Chaudhary
does not want any alliance with BJP, it is believed that he might settle down
for three seats, namely Kairana, Bagpat and Mathura.

RAJASTHAN BJP INFIGHTING
Rajasthan BJP leaders
are yet to learn any lessons from their loss in the assembly elections as there
is still no let-up in their infighting. Although the party central leadership
has tried to pacify the warring factions by making Gulab Chand Kataria as
leader of opposition and Vasundhara Raje supporter Rajendra Rathore as his
deputy, the former chief minister has drawn up her own list of Lok Sabha
candidates list. On the other side Gulab Chand Kataria has also made his own
candidate list. In the last election BJP won all the 25 Lok Sabha seats but has
lost two seats in by-elections. It is believed that the infighting between the
leaders may cause the loss of many more seats in the coming Lok Sabha
elections. The RSS feels that Dushyant Singh, the son of Vasundhara Raje, may
lose from Jhalawar seat this time and therefore it wants Vasundhara to contest
there as she could win the seat on one side and help the party develop a new
leadership in the state in place of her, which could end the infighting.
ANOTHER
YEDDYURAPPA GAMBLE FAILS
With another failed
attempt to dislodge the JD(S)-Congress government in Karnataka, BJP leader and
former chief minister BS Yeddyurappa leader BJP is going through a bout of
disappointment. It is learnt that Yeddyurappa has tried to get a appointment
with party president Amit Shah with his contingent of MLAs in Delhi but he was
asked to stay back after the BJP national convention in Delhi as a meeting
could not be fixed. The central leadership is of the view that the party should
lie low until Yeddyurappa managed to put together adequate numbers to form an alternative
government. This prompted the BJP MLAs from Karnataka, who were in a resort in
Gurgaon, to return home. Meanwhile, Congress has issued show cause notice to
all the four MLAs who were absent from the legislature party meeting. At least
two of them had informed the leadership about their inability to attend as they
were outside the state.
SURJEWALA HAS
UPPER HAND IN JIND
The Jind by-election in
Haryana scheduled for January 28 has turned into a prestige fight after
Congress fielded sitting Kaithal MLA and media chief Randeep Surjewala,
apparently to create a buzz before the Lok Sabha polls. But factoring in the
reality that it is a four-cornered contest with three Jat candidates and a
Punjabi in the fray, the Congress has decided not to take any chances. Party
treasurer-cum-trouble shooter Ahmed Patel swung into action and roped in Jai
Prakash, a renegade Congressman, back to the fold to campaign for Surjewala.
The party hopes that about 2,000 votes would be added in the process, which
could turn into a clincher in the by-election. The reports on the ground
suggested that Surjewala has an edge over other candidates. (IPA)
