Allahabad renamed as Prayagraj. Will voters be favoring BJP?

Kumbh Mela is just a fortnight ahead and amid such time the much hyped renaming of Allahabad has been approved by the Centre. As sought by the Uttar Pradesh government, the city will now be called as Prayagraj.

Allahabad, Prayagraj, BJP

The Yogi Adityanath cabinet took the decision of renaming the historically significant city from Mughal period about two months ago though it was met with resistance by the opposition.

Twenty-five more towns and villages across India will be renamed. Consent has been given by the central government.

Meanwhile, UP Chief Minister Adityanath has announced to be renaming Faizabad as Ayodhya.

The iconic Mughal Sarai railway junction is learned to be renamed as Deen Dayal Upadhyay station and UP government said it would be like a commemorate to the memory of RSS ideologue. Centre approved the name last year and change officially came earlier this year in August.

Haryana Chief Minister Manohar Lal Khattar showed similar enthusiasm and proposed to rename the Pindari in Jind district as Pandu Pindara, the name which was called in the Mahabharata.

Lately Prime Minister Narendra Modi renamed three islands of Andaman archipelago to serve as a tribute to Netaji Subhash Chandra Bose. The name was cleared in 2017.

West Bengal Chief Minister proposed new name for the state as Bangla, but the proposal is pending as the name sounds similar to Bangladesh.

Renaming of state requires amendment of the Constitution while renaming of city, town or village needs an executive order.

An appeal

The legacy of IPA, founded by Nikhil Chakravartty, the doyen of journalism in India, to keep the flag of independent media flying high, is facing the threat of extinction due to the effect of the Covid pandemic.
